Your proposed modifications sound good if you properly credit yourself for your work and that of others so it is clear the work that you did. If you are retheming the game, not all sprites need to be yours for it to count as a significant modification. Each sprite you make yourself can count as a significant modification. Make sure to properly credit everything including your own work. Not crediting correctly can result in zeros on assignments.
